First things first: according to the NHS choices website drinking alcohol on a regular basis, above the recommended limits will endanger your lifestyle. This advice is particularly aimed at many who consider themselves ‘social drinkers’ – but may well be drinking more than the recommended amount and don’t believe they are putting their health at risk.
As chiropractors we offer help and advice on a wide range of issues and we find that people are confused about what the ‘safe’ drinking levels of alcohol are.
Drinking above the daily limit of alcohol regularly could lead to you suffering various cancers, stroke or heart attacks later on in life.
The guidelines for alcohol consumption are that men shouldn’t drink more than 3 to 4 units of alcohol per day. For women it’s 2 to 3 units of alcohol. The following link gives an indication as to the number of units in different drinks. http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/alcohol/Documents/drink_diary.pdf
Most drinks now have a unit guide printed on them but when you are out you could lose track of how much you are drinking. Essentially, a half pint of beer is around one unit which means men can reach their daily limit by consuming just two pints of normal strength beer and women by consuming one and a half pints.
Or, if you are drinking wine, a woman will reach her limit after just one glass and a man after one and a half glasses! And that’s a normal glass size, not the big ones that people use at home!
People should also be aware that if you’ve had a particularly ‘heavy’ session you should avoid alcohol for 48 hours. Your body needs to recover from the damaging effects of alcohol.
If you drink more than the recommended daily limits unfortunately you’re not alone. It’s thought around 9 million people a day in the UK are drinking more than is good for them.
We all know of people who routinely polish off a bottle of wine in an evening but they really are creating a problem for their future health.
This is where the holistic approach of chiropractic care can be useful. If your body is compromised by excessive alcohol consumption it can make you more prone to health problems in general. From an initial assessment a chiropractor will put together a plan to alleviate the pain you present with such as back or neck pain. Sciatica may cause foot numbness, but so can the effects of long term drinking. A chiropractic consultation and examination will aim to differentiate between the two. Chiropractors aim to encourage their patients to make healthy lifestyle changes and as well as exercise advice this, where necessary, may include advice on how to control excessive alcohol consumption.
