exercise advice from north london chiropractorThere is overwhelming evidence that taking regular exercise has considerable health benefits.  Not only can it help you lead a healthier life, it will even make it happier!

One of the simplest, most effective and often overlooked forms of exercise we can take is walking.  To gain the benefit from walking it needs to be done at a fast pace. That means you’re working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break into a sweat.

A great way to tell if you are walking at a fast enough pace is to check whether you can still talk but not be able to sing the words of a song!

Many patients tell me as a chiropractor in North London that they struggle with fitting in taking  exercise into their daily lives as they can’t get to the gym for example.  The benefit of walking as your exercise routine is that you don’t need to go to the gym – you can get out onto the streets and parks of  North London.

In North London we are fortunate to have access to many walking paths all around us.  One such example is the Highgate and Hampstead circular walk .

The Northern Heights Circuit, as it is known, is a nine mile long self-guided trail, taking in 350 points of interest around Highgate, Hampstead and Hampstead Heath.  It is broken into sections e.g. Section 1 is 2 miles long and runs between Highgate Village to Kenwood House.  Section 2 is 1 mile long and runs between Highgate Village to Parliament Hill Fields.

Why not get your walking shoes on this Long Weekend and start walking.

Remember to check with your doctor before undertaking any form of exercise if you have a medical condition or are unsure.

Healthy Outlook at Muswell Hill Chiropractic ClinicAs a chiropractor in North London, I treat patients who can benefit from incorporating exercise into their daily routine but feel they have to join a gym,  or run 20 miles a day to benefit from it.

However,  for most I recommend starting out by taking the most underrated form of exercise which is walking.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to get active,  lose weight and become healthier.  Another great advantage is that it is free.

You may be surprised at the number of great places there are to go walking around Muswell Hill and surrounding areas of North London.  Here are a few areas that I recommend as a chiropractor in North London to patients.

These include places such as Alexandra Park,  Hampstead Heath or alternatively a 12 mile borough wide walk, known as the Better Haringey Trail.

Just on our doorstep in Muswell Hill is Alexandra Park.  The Park is conveniently located for the surrounding areas of Finchley,  Highgate,  Crouch End,  Southgate,  Enfield and Wood Green.

The Better Haringey Trail which is a 12 mile borough wide circular walk.  The trail connects many sites of historical and environmental importance in the borough.  It takes in Bruce Castle,  Wood Green,  Highgate , Finsbury Park and Tottenham Hale and is 19 km or 12 miles long.  Don’t worry,  you can take shorter walks within the trail and there is plenty of public transport.

Why not get out and get going this Spring, however, you may  want to let the smog clear first!

While we certainly advocate taking regular exercise it is important to dback pain advice north london chiropractorkeeo so in a safe way. Exercise adds pressure to our joints and muscles. If not done properly it can cause issues to your back and neck.

If you’re heading to the gym to exercise then here is some advice to follow to keep your back safe.

Get ready …

  • Visit your chiropractor who can advise on the approach you should take to a new exercise routine. He should also be able to advise you on signs to look out for to indicate that you may be overdoing it.
  • Make sure you have the right clothing for the type of exercise you are going to be doing. Clothing that is too tight can constrict your movement and can lead to injury. Footwear is especially important.
  • Warm up first. Many injuries and strains occur are a result of not warming up beforehand. (And remember too warm down too!)
  • If in doubt, make sure that there are no medical reasons why you can’t start the exercise your about to undertake. This is especially important if you haven’t taken any regular exercise before. Your chiropractor or GP may be able to advise on this.

Use equipment properly

  • Keep your legs at least a hip’s width apart and always bend your knees when using weights. Remember to avoid bending from the waist as this will increase the stress on your lower back.
  • Keep weights you are working with as close to your body as possible to avoid injury. A weight held at arm’s length can have the effect of being up to 5 times heavier!
  • Avoid over reaching and stooping when using machines as you can stretch your back. Make sure the seat of the machine is positioned correctly to avoid this.

Workout your back

  • Incorporate stretches and exercise specifically designed to strengthen your back. Incorporate a simple programme developed by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) that is designed specifically to help. Watch the video below.
