With Andy Murray’s recent success at Wimbledon, many people are digging out their tennis racquets and heading to the courts for a spot of tennis.
As a Chiropractor in North London I encourage people to get outdoors and take regular exercise, however, this always comes with the caution of taking precautions against injuries and strains.
Common injuries and strains that I treat as a chiropractor on patients that play tennis include tennis elbow, wrist strain, back pain and tendonitis of the shoulders and knees.
If you are a tennis player or are simply inspired to get out there and emulate Andy Murray, here are a few tips to keep you safe:
- Warm Up before you start. Many injuries and strains are caused by insufficient warm up. Make sure you stretch and warm up your muscles with a suitable warm up and stretching routine.
- Watch out for the pressure points. The repetitive nature of actions like serving, ground strokes and volleying put your joints at most risk.
- Keep hydrated. Drinks plenty of fluids like water to keep your muscles and joints working better.
- Cool down after you finish. Just like warming up you want to go through a cool down routine to avoid your muscles tightening up.
With an increase in health problems arising from our sedentary lifestyles, it’s great to see people wanting to get outdoors and taking exercise. If you have been inspired to take exercise and get out there and play tennis then make sure you stay safe by following these tips.
