BUPA has released results from recent research that it has undertaken that reveals that working Brits are a nation of ‘desk potatoes’. The research showed 1 in 5 (30%) of people only leave their desk to go to the bathroom or grab a drink.
The British weather is also to blame, with a third of people claiming it puts them off leaving their desk at lunchtime and going out to lunch.
As a North London Chiropractor at Muswell Hill Chiropractic Clinic, we see patients who spend too many hours at sitting at their desk who are experiencing back and neck pain.
Here is our advice to helping you prevent back problems if you are sitting for long periods at your desk:
- Every 30 -40 minutes, stand up and stretch, change position and even walk around if possible.
- Ensure your desk and chair is set up in the best way for you and your back. Remember:
- Your feet should be flat on the ground when you are sitting, your knees bent with a slope from your hips to your knees.
- Your computer screen should be positioned so that your eyes are level with the top of the screen.
- You should be relaxed when sitting in your chair. Make sure your bottom is against the back rest and your shoulder blades are also touching the back rest.
- Your arms should be flat with your elbows level with your desk.
- Always use a chair that has arm rests.
- Keep yourself hydrated with water – avoid too much tea and coffee.
- Take any opportunities you have during the day to take a little exercise, such as using the stairs instead of the lift.
Taking these simple steps will help you protect your back and hopefully prevent you from suffering back pain in the future.
If you are suffering back pain or neck pain then why not make an appointment with us and find out how we may help you.
